My current paintings are acrylic on spruce ply. The work is the combination of flat and flattened imagery; their juxtaposition leading to new meaning or interpretation. It is built up in layers using masks and stencils, one of the important aspect of the work is that the final picture space does not necessarily reflect the order that the paint was applied (the last layer is not necessarily the front layer).
I paint on spruce ply in order to have a hard working surface that the paint can be applied to. It is a natural material that will age and it links back to early paintings produced on wooden panels. The format of the paintings uses a ratio of 4:3 similar to the now traditional video format used in digital cameras but not in 35mm film. I use acrylic as it is quick drying and can easily be combined with acrylic varnish when developing the imagery.
Having originally studied sculpture, I first started painting in the early 1980’s. I then became interested in how digital technology was being used as a medium for creating visual imagery.
It is only recently I have started to look again at using this medium in my work, combining both processes.
