I have over 12 years experience of using vinyl in public art installations, exhibitions and designs suitable for office or domestic situations. I use it, or some of the processes it requires, in the development in much of my work, including as a mask in developing my recent paintings.
Vinyl is a material that interests me as it has introduced a new material that relies on digital processes for the production of visual work. It is a modern industrial material that is popular for sign writing as work can be designed on computer, giving a high degree of control to the layout of a design, which can then be cut by machine making production quick and predictable. It has all but replaced traditional sign writing materials such as paint.
The material has opened a whole new range of possibilities for applying a design to a surface. It can be combined with backlit light boxes to create illuminated objects or to apply colour or etched effect to a glazed window or screen. It can incorporate photographic imagery but requires the edge, surface, quality of line and colour to be considered in a different way to a printed photograph. It can be applied on a large scale in a public architectural context and can be sited as a temporary or semi permanent art work. When applied to glass it enables the building to interact with the work both with how it affects the space that the glass dissects and the constantly changing light levels during the daily cycle of the space where the work is sited.
